People often ask where the realness and heart of R&B has gone. R&B has transitioned from where it was in the 90s to a more pop/ hip hop sound. You've got singers rapping and rappers singing. THERE'S TOO MUCH CONFUSION! In this age of autotune, poor lyricism, and just plain dumb songs there is one artist who proves that there is still hope for this genre. That sliver of hope comes from Toronto, Canada and is named Lisa Banton. I found out about Lisa through Spotlight Urban Music Magazine. I believe she was interviewed before me, but I can't remember. Regardless, I'm glad that they introduced me to the music of this rising star. She's the complete package. Beauty, an amazing and soulful voice, and lyrics that hit the heart. It's evident that she is a wordsmith lyrically. She began writing at the age of 10 and ever since has carried a pen and pad everywhere she went. Her dedication to writing shows throughout her execution of songs. Her songs and vocals are reminiscent of the 90s Mary J. Blige and I honestly believe that Lisa is what the R&B game has been missing. Her recent mixtape "Mirror Mirror Vol. 1" is a display of her talents as she covers songs such as Jay-Z's "Lost Ones", Common's "The Food", and Kanye West's "Good Life". Overall, she is definitely worth the listen.
Favorite songs: "Something New", "Ode To You", and "How Many"
